63-year-old man is latest H1N1 casualty

KUALA LUMPUR: A 63 year-old man has become the country’s latest influenza A (H1N1) casualty, Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

The man who suffered chronic obstructive airway disease (COAD) was admitted to Tuanku Jaafar Hospital, Seremban on April 22 and died the next day.

Dr Ismail said although the man was confirmed positive H1N1, the specialist said that it was due to blood infection.

“As such, H1N1 deaths nationwide remain at 80 people,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Up to 5.30pm yesterday, 39 H1N1 cases were reported bringing the total to 13,436 cases.

Three influenza like illness (ILI) cluster cases were reported in Pahang, Melaka and Kedah up to 8am today bringing the cases to 545.

Dr Ismail said of the 545 cases, 60 (11 percent) were positiveH1N1. Ten patients were in the Intensive care Unit (ICU) of which nine had risk factors.

“The majority of deaths related to H1N1 virus infections involved those with asthma, diabetes, kidney ailment, pregnant women and morbid obesity.”

He urged those in the categories mentioned to receive H1N1vaccination at 104 health facilities nationwide.
